WhybinTBWA: The Beginning: First Blood: Gaiden

Here we are. First session at WhybinTBWA.

Whybin proudly demonstrates their accomplishments in their lobby (rightfully so!). We are immediately confronted by a large backlit and glowing painting of an enormously gay nature scene (pretty sure there were some centaurs in there); this is the GAYNZ campaign, WhybinTBWA's current crown and magnum opus.

A friendly bloke, name unknown, lead us down the colourful company corridors to the briefing room. Random, eccentric artwork covers the walls, teddy bears and rock stars, and I'm pretty sure I saw Marilyn Monroe.

Ahh, yes. Here we are. The briefing room. Much anticipated. A large table with larger couches seats most of my RMIT peers, but Doug, Raf, and myself are left to relax on stools in the background. The table is generously covered with assorted sodas and corn chips. My nervous peers are too nervous to take any of the offerings. Perhaps they are afraid their hands will be electrocuted, or a giant hammer will swing down from the ceiling and squash them.

And now... the brief.

[imagine a brief happening here]

Ahh, and what a fine brief it was! Truly, it was a king among briefs.

Our heads filled to bursting with knowledge of our task, nay, our quest, we're left to leave in a stilted, awkwardly fashion. I manage to spill a drink on their fine wood table just as we're being ushered out. YOU WILL GO FAR IN THIS INDUSTRY COOPER BLAKEMORE.

Our team is left to ruminate on the International Women's Day...

...and myself, on my first real, close encounter with a real agency brief. In all honesty, I am filled with a sense of dread. Am I talented enough, ambitious enough, to make it in this industry? Do I have the "right stuff"? Am I a hack? Am I a creative fraud? As our team sits in a local pub, tossing concepts back and forth, I sit there in silence, hoping to contribute anything useful to the discussion. More and more frantically, a delight begins to come over me, building and building. Yes, I think I have it:

"What if..."

There is an awkward silence as my teammates digest my idea. Blank faces. Suddenly, they understand the concept as I do. Their faces brighten into a joyful smile.

I become swollen with a great confidence. "Yes," I think. "I can make it in this industry."
